FAQs

  • The Children’s Burrow welcomes children ages three (by 9/1/2024) to five.

Since most of our day is spent outdoors in open spaces, children need to:

    • Be out of diapers and pull-ups and be able to handle toileting primarily independently

    • Be past the stage of putting things randomly into their mouths

    • Be able to follow verbal directions

    • Stay with the group

    * Families do not need to be members of Tyler Arboretum to enroll their children.

  • Nature is our classroom, and we will be spending time outside every day in all seasons, rain or shine.

  • Yes, we use the Sequoia Room if we need to go inside due to unsafe weather conditions.

  • Yes! Our mission is to offer opportunities for children to establish meaningful connections with the natural world no matter what their level of experience.

  • Absolutely! Through hands-on activities that engage children and emerge from their interests, kids build skills in early language arts, math, and science. Our days include many opportunities for children to develop literacy skills – morning message, question of the day, songs, stories, nature journals, and so much more! Children count, measure, identify shapes, create patterns, investigate volume, and develop number sense. They build self-help skills and independence as they organize and care for their belongings, taking on and off layers of clothing as the weather and their activities change. Kids also practice following routines and navigating transitions as we move throughout our day. As children explore and play together, they share ideas, problem solve, and take turns. Learning in the natural world offers so many ways to build the foundation that children need as they continue their education in kindergarten and beyond.

  • *Please send your child every day with a backpack containing a FULL water bottle, a lunch, waterproof pants and boots, and extra clothing (underwear, socks, shirt, pants or shorts, mittens and hat for cold days).

*Please label all clothing, gear, and backpacks with your child’s name.

    * If you would like your child to use sunscreen and/or bug spray, please apply it at home before arrival.

    * Please leave toys and lovies at home. Children are welcome to bring treasures they find in nature or artwork from home to share with us.

  • Your child needs comfortable clothing that allows them to move freely. Active learning can mean jumping in Clothing and Gear Recommendationspuddles, making mud cakes, working in the garden, and much more. Engaging in these activities is central to children’s experience at The Children’s Burrow, and families should expect that children will get wet, muddy, and dirty.
