Children have direct and sustained interaction with nature every day. Each day includes a class gathering, guided experiences, a nature walk, snack, a story, free exploration time, and lunch. Traditional specials, such as art and music, are organically woven throughout each day’s activities. While every day includes these components, how much time is spent in each activity and the order of activities is flexible. Our days follow the rhythm of the children, the changes in the seasons, and the shifts in the weather.

Sample Daily Rhythm

Welcome gathering

We greet each other in a circle and sing a welcome song. We invite children to share news from home or a special nature item with the group. We talk about the rhythm of our day and any upcoming events.

Nature walk

Together we investigate the wide variety of natural environments that Tyler Arboretum offers. We walk through the woods and meadows, wade in the creek, and stop to look closely at the wonders of nature.

Story/snack

We read a story together as the children eat a snack.

Free explorations and guided experiences

The children freely explore and play in Tyler’s outdoor spaces. We offer guided experiences focused on journaling, painting/drawing, building, scientific investigating, and more.

Lunch

Children bring lunch from home. We picnic together in some of our favorite spots around the arboretum.

Closing gathering

We invite children to reflect on our day together and to share highlights with each other.
